Friday, 20th February 2009...

I went to visit my ex-school in the morning...

After that I went to Mid Valley to meet up with Eden...

I am staying at Eden's place during my Singapore trip(for the Singapore Open 2009 cubing competition - 1st official competition in Singapore, 28th february~1st march 2009)....so I met up with him and we chat for a few hours...

He brought his cubes along...

His V-cube 5 and Mirror blocks....
And also his stackmat timer...

My first attempt to solve mirror blocks(a.k.a transformer cube =P the concept of solving the mirror blocks is same as a 3x3x3 cube, just that you have to look for the shape/size of the piece instead of the colour...)...
Eden lent me his stackmat timer for me to practice at home(for the competition)...thanks Eden ^_^

Practicing 2x2x2....one of the events I am participating...(I had quitted puzzle solving for a few months - inactive...)3x3x3 and 3x3x3 one-handed...(I had no choice but to practice puzzle solving again for the upcoming competition)
4x4x4... and also 5x5x5....(Almost 5 months haven't solve a 5x5x5 cube)Pyraminx....(Argh....my Mefferts pyraminx is too loose for speed solving... T.T)

Saturday, 7th February 2009....

Just a normal day...I went to school to visit....

The scouts were having troop meeting on that day...

Everyone gathered at the assembly ground...
At the scouts den, den painting....

10th Petaling Scouts usually paint the den once in two years...today is the day...
Who wants to drink soya bean? =P
At the classroom...the scouts were learning about length/distance/height estimation(theory)...

Where you learn how to estimate the length/distance/height without using measuring tools....

The class was conducted by Sir Haw Yu Hong... =P
After that, treasure hunt activity begins....the junior scouts have to find items randomly placed inside the school compound....clues were provided...
The PBSM(Red Crescent) were having their activity as well...

After the troop meeting, I went to Mid Valley to look for part time jobs...

I got some promoter agency contacts....

I passed by Toys R Us and found out that they now sell Rubik's Twist - a.k.a Rubik's Snake, Rubik's Transformable Snake, Rubik’s Snake Puzzle...
I bought one home....something new to me... =P

Chinese New Year 2009

Chinese New Year 2009....

Exact day...26th January 2009(Monday)...

Chinese New Year is one of the most important holidays for Chinese....

During Chinese New Year...family members and relatives gather together to celebrate this festive day....

We go around to visit(In mandarin : bai nien) relatives and friends during the Chinese New Year festive period....

Ang Paos(Red Packets - containing money) are distributed by married couples to children and non-married people during Chinese New Year...

Sound of fire crackers will be heard at many places during the Chinese New Year period...a sign to celebrate the festive event...

Houses will be decorated....

Ang Paos were hung on the plant....
Mandarin oranges are called "Gam" in cantonese... which have a similar sound as gold in cantonese..

Mandarin oranges is a common fruit seen in Chinese New Year...due to the similar sound as gold...

It is like buying gold - fruit version...to eat =)
Chinese New Year snacks are usually placed on tables for guests to eat...

There are various snacks that are only sold during Chinese New Year period...mostly are handmade by normal citizens....and then sold to the public for income....
This is what the ancient China money looks like...the coins hanging on it are the smaller valued currency...and the bottom boat-shaped figure(the actual size is smaller than this) is the larger valued currency....

While visiting my relatives... one of the familes were preparing to view partial solar eclipse(ri shi in mandarin - it is a period where the moon completely blocks the sun, but this is just a partial solar eclipse)....

Reunion Dinner

Reunion Dinner with my family and relatives on 23rd January 2009...

It is a tradition for chinese to have reunion dinner with relatives during Chinese New Year period...

We had our reunion dinner at brickfields, Kuala Lumpur...

Yes, my hometown is Kuala Lumpur...

For Chinese New Year period....we usually have "lou sang" a.k.a "yu sheng"....

Lets go more into the history of "yu sheng"....

Fishermen along the coast of Guangzhou traditionally celebrated Renri, the seventh day of the Chinese New Year, by feasting on their catches. This practice is believed to have started in Chaozhou and Shantou as far back as the Southern Song Dynasty.

In Malaya's colonial past, migrants imported this tradition; porridge stalls sold a raw fish dish which is believed to have originated in Jiangmen, Guangdong province that consisted of fish, turnip and carrot strips, which was served with condiments of oil, vinegar and sugar that were mixed in by customers.

The modern yu sheng dish originated in during Chinese New Year in 1964 in Lai Wah Restaurant and was invented by master chef Than Mui Kai (Tham Yu Kai, co-head chef of Lai Wah restaurant)as a symbol of prosperity and good health amongst the Chinese. Together with Lau Yoke Pui (co-head chef of Lai Wah Restaurant), Hooi Kok Wai (founder of Dragon-Phoenix Restaurant) and Sin Leong, Than Mui Kai was named as one of the Four Heavenly Culinary Kings of Singapore some 40 years ago for their Cantonese culinary prowess and ingenuity.

The tradition is still widely practiced till today and has since spread to many parts of Asia, although not practised as much as in Malaysia and Singapore.

The taste of the original raw fish dish was standardized with a special sauce using plum sauce, rice vinegar, kumquat paste and sesame oil, and the fish was served with carrots, chilli, turnips, limes, jellyfish, red pickled ginger, sun-dried oranges and other ingredients, turning this simple dish into an exquisite salad with 27 ingredients.

The original dish used raw mackerel, although in deference to the popular wishes of customers, salmon was later offered as an alternative due to the growing popularity of Salmon.

Since then, yu sheng has become a staple Chinese New Year dish in Malaysia as well as in Chinese communities in Singapore and is typically available only during this festive season.

Today, this dish is served as an appetizer to raise 'good luck' for the new year and is usually eaten on Renri, the seventh day of the Chinese New Year. In a celebration known as "lo hei" (Cantonese 撈起 or 捞起), families and friends gather around the table and, on cue, proceed to toss the shredded ingredients into the air with chopsticks while saying auspicious wishes out loud to mark the start of a prosperous new year and it's customary that the higher you toss, the greater your fortunes!

Typical ingredients include : fresh salmon, daikon (white radish), carrot, red pepper (capsicum), ginger, daun limau nipis (lime tree leaves), Chinese parsley, chopped peanuts, toasted sesame seeds, Chinese shrimp crackers (or fried dried shrimp), five spice powder. The dressing is made primarily from plum sauce.

I drank some red wine on that day...

Although excessive alcohol consumption has adverse health effects, epidemiological studies have consistently demonstrated that moderate consumption of alcohol and wine is statistically associated with a decrease in death due to cardiovascular events such as heart failure.

SMK Sultan Abdul Samad Merentas Desa 2009

Last saturday, 17th January 2009....I visited SMK Sultan Abdul Samad...my ex-secondary school..

They were having Merentas Desa(Road Run) on that day....

Every year, secondary schools will have a day for Road Run - usually beginning of the year....to select the top few stamina runners of each school to participate in the district's marathon competition....

The form 3,4,5,Lower 6 and Upper 6 students gathered at the tapak perhimpunan(assembly ground).....
The form 1 and 2 students gathered at the basketball court....
Let the road run begin !!

My friend and I positioned at this location to put up arrow signs to guide the runners on which way to go...we are ex-quartermasters(Quartermaster club members - that helpout during sport activities of the school)...
There were some changes in school...

One of the changes was the guard house....renovated...
This was the guard house before it renovates...

Membership Drive 2009

Membership Drive 2009....December 2008 till January 2009..

Every year, the 10th Petaling Scouts of SMK Sultan Abdul Samad will have a membership drive to promote scouts to the school...especially form 1 and new students....

For 10th Petaling Scouts...membership drive is organized by the form 4 scouts...

The preparation for membership drive usually starts early of december - 1 month before january... like building up gadgets, preparing presentations, permission letters to promote..and more..

When school reopens(january)...everything should be almost done or already done...the promotion takes place in the first few weeks of school...

Membership Drive 2009's gadget site(campsite - for display)....

The main entrance....gadgets are built by tying knots between mangroove wood(bakau)...jute ropes,raffia strings,nylon ropes and more.. are the materials used for tying...hardwork from scouts to build up the gadget... so please respect their hardwork =)Notice : DANGER ! Do not enter the campsite without permission from Form 4 Scouts ! hahaha...A tripod tower(a three-legged pyramid shaped gadget) to put up the Malaysia flag...Tents....we sleep in these during outdoor camps...and sometimes sleep in it during indoor camps(based on situation) too...2 tripod gadgets, 1 quadpod gadget(4 legged pyramid shape), and a "shortcut" hour-glass(X-shaped gadget, where the platform at the top part)..

There are these nylon ropes tied on the gadget and on an anchor(the wood stabbed into the ground)...they are used to stabilise(fixed to the position) the gadget...making it more stationary and safe for people to go up the gadget...

Going up to the hour-glass...Talking about gadgets....this is an example of what scouts can do...

Malaysia book of records for the tallest man-made scout pioneering gadget in Malaysia...

By the Shiang Yang 219th Kinta Open Scout Troop of Perak....they built this gadget during the mid-year of 2008...I went for the camp to visit the gadget too...around 12~14 floors high - 40~43 metres if not mistaken...

Summit USJ

I went to Summit USJ on 29th December 2008...

The Malaysian cube forum have information that Summit USJ have a store that sells a lot of puzzles...

Since I was there...so I decided to look for the store...

And I finally found the store...it is at LG(Lower ground) floor...a normal stall....in front of MPH bookstore...
As usual....solve all the puzzles =P But I wasn't able to solve the megaminx last step...well..that was just my first attempt to solve a megaminx..(I never search for any solutions on how to solve a megaminx before...)..so it means a good start.... ^_^

The puzzles that I solved..from left to right : 3x3x3 jumbo cube, normal 3x3x3 cube, 2x2x2 cube, pyraminx, megaminx...
I decided to buy a 3x3x3 jumbo cube....RM10

So let's compare the size with a normal 3x3x3 cube...

Left : 3x3x3 Jumbo cube
Right : White old type A 3x3x3 cube(with Cubesmith stickers)

The size of the jumbo cube is around 3 times the size of a standard sized cube..

I bought it because it is unique...collection =P
I also decided to buy a megaminx...RM29....a 12-coloured puzzle...with 20 corners !

I failed to solve it on my 2nd attempt too...

Managed to solve it on my 3rd attempt...and solved 10+ times so far...*will solve more in the future*

So the fastest solve I achieved in that 10+ attempts is 7 mins 33.82 seconds...*it is not smooth, easy pops, and locks up a lot*

Tanjung Sepat Trip

My relatives and my family went to Tanjung Sepat on 28th December 2008...It is somewhere near Klang...

Firstly, we paid a visit to Ganofarm Factory Outlet...
It is more like a tourist attraction...a mushroom showroom for tourist to visit...
Some facts on different kind of mushrooms....

Mushroom helps in various health problems of humans...mainly helping on blood circulations and more...
This is how they cultivate mushrooms...

A bottle filled with cotton wool and some other stuffs in it...(well I do not know much..)

Where there are lots of mangroove trees there...primary colonisers? =P

It is around morning-afternoon...the sea level have a low tide...allowing us to have a clear view of the mangroove trees....at this time of the day, land breeze occurs, wind blows from the land towards the sea....astronomy studies said that the low and high tides are due to the gravitational pull of the moon, causing changes to the sea level...
They also have a retail store there, for tourists to visit and buy their products...mushrooms and more...some health products too...
After visiting the Ganofarm Factory Outlet, we decided to go to a nearby beach...
Flying kites...the kite on the right is mine.. the one with the aeroplane shape... and the one on the left is my relative's...
After that, we decided to have dinner at a nearby restaurant...

On the way there, I saw cattles(cows) beside the road...local cows are brown in colour..different from overseas'...
We had our dinner at Bay Watch Restaurant...a seafood restaurant...
The dishes we ate...fishes, squids, prawns, vegetables, and some type of clam food...

Singapore Open 2009 (Cube Competition)

The Singapore Open 2009 Cube Competition will be on 28th February till 1st March 2009...I registered for the competition and hope for the best....

This competition is the first official(international level) cube competition in Singapore...reachable distance for Malaysians and other nearby countries....it is also the nearest official competition for Malaysians to participate(there isn't any official competitions so close to Malaysia before - this is the first)..

An official cube competition is permitted by WCA(World Cube Association)...the rules and regulations of an official competition will be the same as WCA....a WCA Delegate will attend the official competition to make sure things work according to the WCA standard...participants that participated an official competition will have their solving speed ranked on the WCA ranking list (http://www.worldcubeassociation.org/results/regions.php)....

Survivor 08

Survivor 08 (10th Petaling Scout Camp)...4th December till 8th December 2008...but I went on the 6th till the 8th due to some other events that clash with the camp time...

I missed many activities of the camp...

On the 3rd day of Survivor 08, 6th December 2008, I arrived in the afternoon....everyone were out...they were having an activity named The Survival...something like Amazing Race...where you go around the city(Petaling Jaya) to perform tasks and more...

This is one of the tasks of The Survival...should be checking prices of some items I guess...I did not attend the activity, so I do not know much...this type of activity is to train scouts to know the way around - able to go around cities and learn to ask for directions and more(socialise)...

After The Survival...participants were gathered at school...
After that, the participants cooked dinner and fed themselves well....to train scouts to be more independent - cook for themselves...
Crime Night activity....CSI(Crime Scene Investigation)....

There was a murder case going on....participants need to search for clues to solve the mystery of the crime...
Participants questioning crime suspects....
The detectives(participants) were not able to solve the mystery...and a flashback to the actual time of the murder case was demonstrated by the seniors...
OBH activity....

Where participants were being awaken at night and blindfolded and lead to an unknown place... and sit at a spot for a certain period of time(usually 1 hour+)...this is to train the patience of scouts...
Seniors on duty to keep participants awake - participants are not allowed to sleep during the activity...
After the OBH activity, I went to sleep...

The next morning, I went to my uncle's wedding...and missed many activities...

I came back at night...where the BBQ night(A tradition activity for 10th Petaling Scouts) was almost over...but they left some food for me =)
After that, they had patrol presentation... there were 4 patrols....a patrol is a group of participants in a team...patrols have leader,assistant leader,quartermaster(incharge of equipments and more),timekeeper and more...

Patrol presentation is where each patrol have to prepare songs, claps, cheers, logo, flags, and more...to present their patrol to everyone...to let others know about their patrol..(like introduction)..this activity is able to train scouts to be more creative and improve their public speaking...
Drama act...

Participants have to come up with a drama act to present....to improve creativity and performing skills....
The next day - last day....

Time to pack up...
After that, Footdrill competition...

Footdrill competition a.k.a(also known as) marching competition...where participants have to present their marching skills and get graded by judges(seniors)....
Patrol leaders have to march out and salute(hormat) to the judge(senior) and report(laporkan diri) information(patrol leader's name, amount of patrol members, and being ready and set to perform the task set by the judge) to the judge...

Marching is able to train patience, discipline, synchronisation, and stamina....
Troop leader activity...

Patrol leader or assistant patrol leader of each patrol is said to be acted as a troop leader of a troop....

Seniors will question the acting-troop leader on how he/she would do for a troop...and being questioned with lots of no-answer type of questions..

This is to train participants to be able to control their emotions, tolerance(resist scoldings), think rationally, and also patience....

My Uncle's Wedding (William Phan)

7th December 2008...my uncle's wedding....

I was at Survivor 08(Scout Camp) before my parents came to fetch me home to clean up and prepare to go to my uncle's wedding lunch...

The venue is a chinese restaurant...well..many chinese have their weddings at chinese restaurants...

The wedding car....decorated nicely...
The wedding cake...many layers.....well...that is usual for restaurant wedding...
Our first dish of the day...variety of food....this is a standard arrival of dish everytime you order set dishes from chinese restaurant...the first dish usually will be a plate with variety of food....
Second dish...yes...soup....many years ago it used to be shark fin soup...but nowadays, sharks became an endangered species....so the soup changes ingredient in it...like crab meat, vegetables or others....that is what you will get for a second dish in chinese restaurant(set meals)...

After the second dish...the dishes will arrive according to the ordered set except for the last dish - usually dessert...

The dish arrive according to the set meal choosed...you might get fish or any other dishes as a third dish and so on....
Next dish....prawns....

And then mixed vegetables...

Followed by "loh mai fan"...which is starchy rice? well I do not know what is it called in english..

The final dish.....dessert....mostly sweet food....which I do not want to consume so much - prevent diabetes....

Time for the bridegroom's family(bridegroom in black outfit) and the bride's family(bride in white dress) to go up the stage....where the bridegroom will yell out "Yam Sing" as long as he could......after yelling "Yam Sing"....everyone that attend the wedding will have to drink up their tea, water, wine, beer, or whatever drink they have on their glass....

End of the wedding...time to go home.... ^_^

Taylor's College is one of the most successful colleges in Malaysia - and also one of the most expensive colleges... Currently, they established 6 campuses in Malaysia and 1 more will be up by around september 2009 - The Lakeside Campus, heard that it would be great and have a nice pleasant view for students...

The open day was held at Taylor's University College - The main campus of Taylor's College(In Subang Jaya - near Sunway Pyramid)..I went alone to the open day...

There are various education routes for a student after their SPM examination...

A student is able to choose :

1. Pre-University..(Usually for students that are not certain with their future careers yet.. it is a better choice for them because after graduating from Pre-University, students are able to choose and enter the field they are interested in ..)

Examples of Pre-University education :

*STPM - Government's Pre-University Education System(
*Private Pre-University - Private Colleges' Pre-University Education System(Cambridge 'A' Levels, South Australian Matriculation, International Canadian Pre-University and more)*

2. Foundation..(Usually for students that are certain with their future careers..unlike Pre-University which have more general knowledge subjects, foundation is a better choice for them because it provides deeper education into that particular field.. but upon graduation, students are only able to enter the degree levels for the particular field they chose..)

3. Diploma..(Usually for students that are weaker in studies.. unlike Pre-University and Foundation which needs at least 5 credits or more in the SPM examination, diploma usually needs around 3 credits or more...diploma is something like foundation + degree levels.. just that it have easier subjects and do not study as deep as degree levels.. students are able to enter the degree levels for the particular field they chose.. just that they gain lesser knowledge compared to a student that chose to take foundation..)

4. Overseas..(Studying overseas...rich families are able to send their child to overseas to study)

The hall where students can search and enquire more about the courses they are interested in...there were lots of people there! Many parents and students too... I enquired more on their computing courses they provide..and also went to the engineering section to ask for some information...

They are not specialised in computing courses which I hunt for... only 2 degree levels choice for computing.. =( too bad..guess I have to look for another college that is specialised in computing courses..

It has been a long time since I last blogged...

I stopped practicing cubing for quite some time...now I am trying to look for more information on computing courses... and also into xPKserver for the time being...

Thursday, 4th December 2008...my friends and I went to Sunway Pyramid to ice skate..
Ice skating works because the metal blade at the bottom of the ice skate shoe can glide with very little friction over the surface of the ice. However, slightly leaning the blade over and digging one of its edges into the ice ("rockover and bite") gives skaters the ability to increase friction and control their movement at will. In addition, by choosing to move along curved paths while leaning their bodies radially and flexing their knees, skaters can use gravity to control and increase their momentum. They can also create momentum by pushing the blade against the curved track which it cuts into the ice. Skillfully combining these two actions of leaning and pushing— a technique known as "drawing"— results in what looks like effortless and graceful curvilinear flow across the ice.

How the low-friction surface develops is not exactly known, but a large body of knowledge does exist. These are explained below.

Experiments show that ice has a minimum kinetic friction at −7°C (19°F), and many indoor skating rinks set their system to a similar temperature. The low amount of friction actually observed has been difficult for physicists to explain, especially at lower temperatures. On the surface of any body of ice at a temperature above about −20°C (−4°F), there is always a thin film of liquid water, ranging in thickness from only a few molecules to thousands of molecules. This is because an abrupt end to the crystalline structure is not the most entropically favorable possibility. The thickness of this liquid layer depends almost entirely on the temperature of the surface of the ice, with higher temperatures giving a thicker layer. However, skating is possible at temperatures much lower than −20°C, at which temperature there is no naturally occurring film of liquid.

When the blade of an ice skate passes over the ice, the ice undergoes two kinds of changes in its physical state: an increase in pressure, and a change in temperature due to kinetic friction and the heat of melting. Direct measurements show that the heating due to friction is greater than the cooling due to the heat of melting. Although high pressure can cause ice to melt, by lowering its melting point, the pressure required is far greater than that actually produced by ice skates. Frictional heating does lead to an increase in the thickness of the naturally occurring film of liquid, but measurements with an atomic force microscope have found the boundary layer to be too thin to supply the observed reduction in friction.

This machine is to resurface the ice of the skating rink so that the rink will be more dry and safe for skaters to skate...

After a while, many of my friends left and went for other activities in the shopping complex...I, too, left and went for my other activities..only a few more friends skated abit longer...

I went to "digital centre" to check whether my neighbour still works there or not - he worked there a few months ago... but I could not find him there...

So I went to search for twisty puzzles' shop - got the information from Malaysian cube forum..

I managed to find the shop...it is named "my puzzle house"(one of the stores inside asian avenue, it is located at the highest floor - same floor as digital centre)..it sells jigsaw puzzles, twisty puzzles and many other things... as stated from the forum... they said this place sells megaminx and pyraminx...so I asked if I could try the megaminx and pyraminx ...

With dissapointment...the megaminx and pyraminx suks...even their cubes...2x2x2, 3x3x3 and 4x4x4...all suks and the price is mad... expensive and low quality... but can't blame them...they do not know anything about twisty puzzles...

Well...too bad...guess I got to get the megaminx and pyraminx through internet..

I had my lunch at Friday's, Section 14, Petaling Jaya, Selangor... chicken chop and shrimps(which are prawns !)....

It is my first time trying Friday's... recommended by my schoolmates - Wendy's, Friday's and Shakey's... 3 shops have a similarity.. < 's > behind it.. I tried Wendy's a few weeks ago.. and Friday's - "today - passed many days before posting"... soon I will try Shakey's...

But I did not have a good impression on both shops - it is not my taste... well, too bad for me =(

At last, I went to digital mall - a mall in section 14 that sells most of the digital items (example : mobile phones, console games, computer games, computers, console players, movies and more)...

I went there to get some movies to watch during my holidays...

xPKserver...a new server hosted by one of the ex-ero(English Ragnarok Online) pk server members..

For those that do not know... RO (Ragnarok Online) is an online game.. MMORPG(Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) type of online game.. which is based on increasing the level of a character by fighting monsters and so.. it is a game created by Gravity(Company name) of Korea..

Ragnarok Online is the first online game I played(played it since standard 6 till around form 3 or so). I firstly joined the game and after about one year..I switched to a server(server is like a world, different worlds which do not link with one another) named PK Server..it is a server that have the PK(Player Killing) function which enable an individual to kill another player in an open field at any part of the game except for cities..

After a few years of playing(I did not really concentrate on it much after a year or so, just semi playing)..PK Server closed due to the lack of players in the game..the company that host this game for Malaysia is Gameflier(a Taiwan company that eats players' money)..

Well..many people thinks that online game is a waste of time..but you see, I play online games not for the gameplay..I play it to make friends, more like a second msn of mine.. We make friends in school, real life, neighbours, relatives, online, online games, working, hobbies, etcetera.. it is a way of life, relationship with one another is a good habit.. we need contacts for our future..

Why do we need contacts? Ok let me give some examples :

Information - We will be able to obtain information much faster if we have more contacts..

News - News around the world or so would be easily spread to you.. so you will not be outdated..

Job - Easier to look for job if you have more contacts..

Social - When you are bored, you can socialize with your contacts and joke around to solve problems of boredom..

I will only agree that online games are a waste of time if the time spent on it is just for increase the levels of the character or hunting for rare items or so..

By the way, I had already quitted this type of online games for almost 1 year+ now... It was a few days ago, where many of the ex-ero pk server members are bugging me to join the new server hosted by one of the ex-ero pk server members.. it is free of charge.. so, why not?

I get to meet back my ex friends from the game..just like a second msn ! I do not really spend much time on it...just on my account and leave it in the city, anyone can come to chat with me..

SPM(Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) has arrived...I will be sitting SPM the coming tuesday 11 November 2008.

SPM is a major exam for Malaysia...for form 5 students(age 17)..or also called Year 11, Grade 11, Secondary 5 etcetera in other countries..

Well...study time..

Cube gathering in Mc Donald, One Utama...last saturday saturday(25/10/2008)..

Not many people went for the gathering.. I think it is because of the details were posted up late..so many people do not know about the details of the gathering..

People that went : Azraei, David Heng, 3 of my schoolmates and I ...

One of my schoolmates was sleepy so he slept at the gathering..

I tested David Heng's square-1 ...it is an interesting puzzle.. I will try to get one next time...maybe after SPM...

We also competed among ourselves..quite fun..

Got the chinese diys that were ordered from cube freak...got it last monday(20/10/2008)..she ordered it from http://www.cube4you.com/ .. and then sell to us...

The cubes that were ordered from cube freak... 6 are my friends's and 2 are mine.. I helped them to collect the cubes.. 7 old type A cubes and 1 type D cube

Chinese diy stickers... it is bad !! That is why I am getting Cubesmith stickers...

My type D cube...still in the pack..

There was a problem with my type D cube, I got the new type D screws and new type D core... the problem with the screws is that it automatic unscrews itself...the core is fine...

I decided to change switch my type A core with the type D to make a hybrid cube...type D pieces + type A core.. yellow one is the type A core while black one is the type D core..

Disassembled my type D cube to change the core..

I found out that my type D cube have 2 old type D screws and 4 new type D screws... the old type D screws are good while the new type D screws are bad..

Changed the core...

I used....

Blue Threadlocker...to solve the unscrewing problem..it helps to make the tip of the screw more thick so that it will not unscrew itself..

Applying...

Left the cube to dry for a day...the type D cube on the left, on a piece of paper..(the threadlocker takes at least a day to dry up)..

The next day, I started to assemble my old type A cube...

Arranging the pieces...

While assembling, I found out that the type A pieces can't fit into the type D core...so I decided to change to the Rubik's speedcube core... (black - type D core, dull yellow - Rubik's speedcube core)

My method of assembling the cube...

1st : Finish up the center pieces and caps...

2nd : Form a cross on the bottom(slot in 4 edges)

3rd : Finish the 1st layer(slot in 4 corners)

4th : Finish the 2nd layer(slot in 4 edges)

5th : Finish the last layer(slot in the remaining 4 edges and 4 corners)

Lastly : Put on the stickers..

There you have it... an assembled cube !! (My main one-handed cube, type A pieces + Rubik's speedcube core = hybrid cube)

Port Dickson Trip

My family, relatives and I .. went to Port Dickson for vacation during 1st and 2nd October 2008..
During the Raya holidays..

On our way to Port Dickson, we took our breakfast at a restaurant .. vegetables, soup and sotong rings ! and also Milo =)

We followed this computerized map to Port Dickson..this GPS(Global Positioning System) will lead you to any part of the world.. okay...now you should be thinking it is a waste of money to get this..

Explanation : If you go to an unknown place, or lets say you are looking for a food store in a place you do not know. You would be driving around many times to look for it.. Therefore, wasting petrol and time... Petrol = $$(Don't forget that petrol price is increasing) , Time = $$ ..Petrol + Time = More $$.. Petrol is depleting soon, we should save petrol for the sake of mankind. After several months...you will see that it is worth getting one of these...

It is cold, see.. I am shivering =P I also took the underwater cubing video in this swimming pool..The Beach Activities

Volleyball...many people were playing volleyball at the beach.

Banana boat... it overturned due to a big wave... well, they have this activity where people can ride on it and the guide will take them on a tour to the deep sea... when coming back to the seashore, the guide will overturn the boat and all the passengers will be thrown out to the sea..(with life jackets of course).

Some people were flying their kites at the beach, beach is a good place to fly a kite due to the sea breeze that occur around that time..where wind from the sea blow towards the land..

It is getting late... night time..

During the night, sea waves become more aggressive.... I would be washed away if I go further out..

Many people were having BBQ beside the beach... it made us hungry...

Therefore, we went to a restaurant outside of the hotel to take our dinner..

Time for bed, this was my bed during the trip... so lonely T.T

The next day, we took our breakfast at Maybo Kopitiam near our resort...

My breakfast was Chow Kuey Teow.. as in fried kuey teow... and a cup of Milo..

Back at the resort, I saw this artificial ship...it significant the middle ages.... where people do lots of trading with ships, they also battle with ships, transportation were mainly on ships... just imagine life being on a boat, like in the movies... so nice and relaxed...

Lets have some beach activity before checking-out..

Frisbee... a circular piece of plastic with a curved edge which is thrown between people as a game.. played it with my cousins..

Time to take our lunch in the resort... buffet lunch..RM18 per person.. argh...

Well, everytime I eat a buffet meal..I will surely try my best to eat as much as I can and pick the most expensive dish they serve..

Here, the curry chicken turns out to be the most worth dish.. ate lots of it...and drank lemonade too..

After we checked-out, we went to a public beach in Port Dickson... this is the place where I rode the horse...it is beside the public beach..

And also lots of PEOPLE !! This is just part of the beach...haven't include the people that are at the stores beside the beach..

For the ships and boats to park?

When I saw this water tower, it reminds me of the Roman Empire... they had lots of reservoir to store their water supply... and linked it from one to another with aqueducts connecting across the cities of the Roman Empire...

When I passed by the stores beside the beach.... I saw this t-shirt...

Immediately I can see two meanings of life in it...

One of it is Yi San You Yi San Gao(One Mountain Got Another Mountain Higher)..which means even how good you are, there will be another person better than you.. Even if you are the current champion of the world, it doesn't mean that your title will last forever. Someday, somewhere... another person would catch up and claim your title... =)

The second is Backstabbers... See the small red fish on the right? It is luring the black fish to eat it.. by luring the black fish to eat it, the yellow fish spotted the black fish and now the black fish is in danger.. meaning that it is backstabbing the black fish... The world have many backstabbers, beware of the people around you..they might be a backstabber one day, you wouldn't know =P

Time to end this trip....

While on the way back, we passed by the highway and I noticed lots of palm trees beside the highway... now you know why Malaysia is one of the top country for palm oil supply? =)

First horse riding in my life..

Today, afternoon, I went for horse riding when my family, relatives and I were on the way back home from port dickson..passed by a public beach and we decided to spent our time here a while.. there were many things here, one was this horse / donkey riding thing.. I picked the horse...

Yup, it is my first time riding a horse (I know many people ride it before, but it is my first time =P)

The ride was abit shaky, like going to fall off...there wasn't anything to hold..only able to hold the thing I am sitting on..

Time to go back into history....during the war ages long ago... horse riders usually have something to hold to control the horse, some of them take horses to war...they hold a sword on one of the hand and the other hand control the horse..

The greatest of all were the Mongolians...they were once the largest country/empire in the world(even larger than the current Russia, Mongolia was the largest country/empire thoughout human history).. they were able to win a battle with less amount of soldiers while the rival have more.. one of their specialties was the horseback riding skills they had... their archers ride horses and control them with only their legs..while both of their hands are able to control the bow and shoot their rivals... they were hunters and accurate in shooting..

Now look at the current world...not many people are good at horseback riding...it is because we have vehicles and more, horses are not important anymore...that is why this is my first time riding a horse. ^_^

Underwater Cubing Attempt....

Tried my first underwater cubing solve(in one breath solve underwater) during vacation at port dickson...

In the swimming pool...Doing some warm-up solves before doing it underwater...
Factors for underwater cubing : nervous, can't think properly, slower in turning due to in water, red and orange stickers looks almost the same(it is because my goggles was blue in colour). I was also using my one-handed cube(high pop rate), 2 stickers were replaced with double-sided tape(1 month+ ago) and it got wet and hard to see..there was also a small pop during that solve, but fixed back in 1 or 2 seconds.. around 35.xx seconrds solve.. anyways, not that bad for first try.. ^_^ (If you want to watch a higher quality version of the video, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOe4JDycP4k and click the button "watch in high quality", located at bottom right of the video)

Last friday, 26th September 2008.

It was the last day of school before 1 week of school holiday for raya..

Everyone looks so relaxed after school...the students were playing some card game...
They were playing UNO card game...
While I was walking around the school...I could find a lot of people cubing..

Some students were playing basketball..

And for those that were not in the basketball game... they spin the ball !

While in the scouts den, some of them were playing monopoly...

Few hours later, I sense that there would be a great storm coming...

Stopped practicing 3x3x3 cube for almost 3 weeks...

I stopped practicing 3x3x3 cube for almost 3 weeks...then I started practicing it again yesterday...and today I got a new personal best average for 3x3x3 cube... 10 of 12 : 30.41 seconds. Broke it around 6.00pm 21st September 2008. (It is also my 120 days of cubing) After aiming for sub 30 (10 of 12 solves) for almost 1 month+...finally I got it on my 121 days of cubing..average 10 of 12 : 29.29secs . Broke new record again...10/12 : 28.93s ... Broke it around 6.45pm 29th September 2008..WOOHOO 27.00 seconds average 10 of 12 !! Broke it around 4.20pm 30th September 2008.. 2 more seconds away from my aim (10 of 12 : 25.00 seconds).. !!
Just changed to cross on bottom on 2nd October 2008(Night). Got my first sub 20 seconds single solve... 19.79 seconds !! Non-lucky !! 11.xx seconds for cross + first 2 layers and 8.xx seconds for last layer, got a V-permutation.... After training 1 day+ of cross on bottom, broke my single solve record for 3 times in a day, one month+ ago was 22.70 secs, then now broke 22.65 secs, then 21.67 secs and finally 19.79 secs ! Quite a good average too... Broke it around 9.55pm 3rd October 2008(132 days of cubing).
New 10 of 12 record !! After changed to cross at bottom for almost 1 week..finally broke my new 10 of 12 again (10 of 12 : 26.60 secs). I was having some warm up solves before this, after that I timed myself for the sunday contest..and I broke my average 10 of 12 in sunday contest ! Broke it around 1.00pm 12th October 2008(141 days of cubing).

Just trained for 20 minutes today and suddenly got an average 10 of 12 and single record at the same time !! Single : 19.01 secs and 10 of 12 : 25.67 secs !! 0.67 secs away from targetted average(25.00 secs) !! Broke it around 7.00pm 14 October 2008(143 days of cubing).

Just broke my new average 10 of 12 again.. !! 10 of 12 : 25.17 secs...broke it in sunday contest.. Broke it around 1.30pm 27 October 2008(156 days of cubing)..but can't train much now..SPM coming..so won't have much improvements from now till december..
My first sub 25 average !!! Yay!! 10 of 12 : 24.14 secs !! A very good average too.. my previous average record was 25.17 secs and this one is 1.03 secs faster than it !! Next target 10 of 12 : 20.00 secs !! Broke it around 10.55pm 4th November 2008(164 days of cubing).
Now I can easily get average 24.00~25.99 seconds....today just broke new 10 of 12 : 23.64 secs...Broke it around 3.15pm 6th November 2008(166 days of cubing).

Based on the speed...it reminds me of Erik Akkersdijk saying about the "basic speed" one possess. He is telling us about what he think about the speed that fast cubers can obtain when they are introduced to a new puzzle. He refer it as the "basic speed". Saying that why we cannot judge on how long have you been introduced to the puzzle, but also the "basic speed" you have. The "basic speed" consists of a couple of things :

-our fingerspeed

-our mental speed (lookahead)

-our ability to tackle new problems

-our ability to apply known principles to new things

-other things we gained by experience

All of these skills are gained when we practise and play with cubes.

The nice thing of this puzzle isn't really solving it....but the patterns it could create...after trying to solve for an hour or two...I got cought up with many of these cases...

Wow...Looks like a sofa...Looks like a chair =.=" I am not actually making this pattern...but it came out all of a sudden...

The next day, when I was trying to speed... the strings loosen up...so I got to restring the whole Rubik's Magic...learned through youtube tutorial on how to restring a Rubik's Magic..

Done....used a torchlight to find the strings that I dropped on the floor, used a type of pin to make my stringing easier, because we have to strecth the string...if use hand, it would be very painful..

Last saturday I went to school to visit my school's scout troop meeting...Didn't post this on that day because I was quite busy the past few days...

There are lots of kokurikulum activities during saturdays...mostly are uniform meetings...but not many meetings on that day because exams are near...spm trail ...and also pmr is coming soon..

After jungle trekking at gasing hills...my father took me to buy east sheen cubes at Action City Store ... The Gardens, Mid Valley.

Out of the box.....quite a cool way of packaging, the box do not get damage...

My New Collection~ lent a rubik's 3x3 cube to a friend..and the pyraminx isn't mine, I borrowed from a friend..and I also broke my 2x2 rubik's brand cube..

The Rubik's Family..

The Eastsheen Family... The 4x4x4 East Sheen cube and 5x5x5 East Sheen cube are almost same sized...I can't really see any difference in size..maybe an mm or two...

Comparison :

Rubik's : Smaller in size, RM22.90, Available at Toys R Us, Not so smooth, Slower. Do not buy this...it suks a lot ! Although it is cheaper, but it really suks a lot in turning..and need lots of breaking in...lubrication doesn't help much too.

East Sheen : Much larger in size, RM29.80, Available at Action City, Pink stickers replaced Orange, Much more smooth, Faster. This is good ! Slightly more expensive, but better a lot...already good out of the box, even without lubrication already very smooth and fast. If compare to a Rubik's Mini Cube...East Sheen 2x2x2 are very big !

There isn't any debate with Rubik's and East Sheen...because 2x2x2 East Sheen cubes own Rubik's mini cube... overall 2x2x2 East Sheen also good(mostly all top 2x2x2 solvers also use East Sheen)...very worth buying(if you are aiming for speed for 2x2x2).

Currently there are like 30~40+ people able to solve cubes in my school (a lot more are interested in it too, but haven't able to solve it), and everyday we will compete with each other to have fun...the form 1's have many cube players and we always get to compete speedcubing during afternoon session's recess ..

Today got bored after watching tv....so I thought could try to time my average for one-handed.. and a shock improvement from average 2 min 8.xx secs till 1 min 38.74 secs... also broke record 1 min 19.81 secs...Broke it around 1.25am 5th September 2008.

New record 1 min 4.56secs and 10/12 of 1 min 20.69 secs...Broke it around 8.25pm 5th September 2008..

Broke again....1min 2.71 secs single and average 10 of 12 : 1min 15.04 secs. Broke it around 3.45pm 7th September 2008..

Broke again average 10 of 12 : 1 min 10.78 secs.. Broke it around 10.45pm 8th September 2008..and new single solve 50.59 secs but not in this average 10 of 12..

Today, after school, I do not have much things to do...then my friend, tan boon lye, told me that there is a chinese singing competition going on in the dewan bakti (hall) .. so we went to watch the chinese singing competition...

Merdeka Day - Wholesaler Market Tour

So, yesterday,Merdeka Day, I been to Selayang To Fly Kite with my family and relatives..

Fish the human....fishing game ! The fish(human) have to eat the bread from the fishing rod...

Banana golf !! Use the banana to hit the tennis ball to the goal ~

Chair-walk game.... team work...everyone have to be on the few chairs and pass to the opposite of the canteen..

Sign Language

The Semaphore flag signaling system is an alphabet signalling system based on the waving of a pair of hand-held flags in a particular pattern.

Learning all these alternate languages may come in handy at certain situations... you will know the use of it when you come across some situations...

Examples : Trying to signal your friend from far, trying to communicate with your friend without allowing others know what you are trying to say(it is easier to learn all of these alternate language than learning a whole new language).

Yay !! finally get my first sub 35 average...

Solving cube one-handed is tiring, left hand can get around 2 min 30~40 sec average while right hand can get around 2 min 10 seconds average. Time to rest my hands....

Here are the results for my right hand solve for today... deleted my left hand solve times... right hand with a best of 1 min 31.18 sec.

Yay 22.70 secs for single solve !!! Also broke my average 10 of 12....

Yay !! Shocked that suddenly broke 22.70, I was doing many 27~29 seconds before that and suddenly pop out one 22.70 !! Woohooo.... average 10 of 12 also broke at the same time : 36.38 seconds. Broke it at 11.50pm 20th August 2008.

I spent a lot of time training cube today..usually one day only around 1 hour +- ... today suddenly trained around 5 hours+ ... the first 4 hours+ was very frustrating because most of the time average 39.xx , 40.xx etc.. then suddenly I think that my cube haven't been lube for almost 2 months(lube = lubricate cube, means put silicone to make it smoother). Then I went to lube it, and 30 minutes later broke average record again !! Yay...!! Broke it at around 7.45pm 19 August 2008.

Haiz... this is my one-handed times.. I suk at one hand !! Nvm... I will stop training 2 handed for a while, time to train up my one-handed skills.

My second post for my blog...rubik's cube...one of my favourite hobby(started on 25th may 2008). Got my new average speed record for it.

Yay...actually I planned to reach sub 40 average record by end of this school holiday. With shock, I got my first sub 40 average record today, around 4.20am Monday August 18 2008(this is the 3rd day of the 9 days holiday). Aiks, some of the photos are so dark ~.~".

Too happy already ^_^ =P

The results for the average for 10 of 12 solves : 39.75 secs. (10 of 12 solves means solve 12 times then deduct the fastest solve and slowest solve, then the remaining 10 solves divide by 10 to get the 10 of 12 average)
